Collaborators

Over the last six months we decided to explore our visual choices for the film by collaborating with artists we thought relevant to the project.

We decided to focus on exploring land and sea scapes with Elaine Cunningham, a Scottish artist from Arbroath. Elaine predominantly works with oils on large canvases to create powerful, textured impressions of sea and mountain views. We loved the energy and emotion of her work and its palette. She will often sit for hours at a time in all weathers painting/drawing, capturing the moody low light and growing shadows.

Edinburgh-based Tracey Kinniburgh came on board to help with our investigation into perception of shape and colour in nature, specifically for the forest scenes. Tracey was inspired by how branches, plants, landscape and sky intersect with each other when looked at from different angles. We loved Tracey’s dramatic and exaggerated use of colour and the texture she gives the sky on the canvas.

Last but not least we collaborated with Orly Orbach in the exploration of our lead character’s qualities and the main themes of the film: myth, mystery, transformation and identity. Orly works with a variety of formats including pen and ink, plastic-etching, dough sculpture and light box work. We loved Orly’s playful and inventive techniques and her menacing yet poetic portrayals of people. She has explored mythology, fairy tales and contemporary fiction in her illustration work and this combination of experience and execution really excited us.
